Thomas learned the traditional Ashtanga yoga teaching method originallyused in Mysore from Manju Pattabhi Jois, the most experienced practitioner and teacher of Ashtanga yoga in the world, who began practising and teaching Ashtanga yoga under his father, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, in the 1950s.Manju officially authorized Thomas to teach in 2009.Thomas´s understanding of how Ashtanga yoga should be practised andtaught is also strongly influenced by the teachings of David Williams, the first Westerner to learn the complete Ashtanga yoga system of asana and pranayama directly from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the 1970s. Thomas is also grateful for what he learned during the Primary and Intermediate series trainings given by David Swenson, who was among the early Western students of Ashtanga yoga in 1975. Two main elements characterize Thomass’ teaching style: his desire to transmit the practice as his teachers learned it in the 1950s to 1970s; and his commitment to respecting students’ individual potential or limitations, being particularly careful never to injure his students. He encourages his students to develop their individual approach to thepractice and to keep it fun.
